Several of the largest corporations in the U.S. came together to announce the American Institution for Packaging and the Environment (AMERIPEN) on March 7, promising to encourage policy guidance and "science-based decision-making on sustainable packaging."
The new organization is modeled after successful groups in the United Kingdom (INCPEN) and Europe (EUROPEN). AMERIPEN founding partners include The Coca-Cola Co., Colgate-Palmolive, ConAgra Foods, Dow Chemical Co., DuPont, Kellogg, MeadWestvaco, Procter & Gamble, Sealed Air Corp. and Tetra Pak Inc. Future membership is open to material haulers, recycling firms, packaging manufacturers, distributors and retailers. The first meeting of the new organization is scheduled for June 22.
Joan Pierce, vice president of packaging sustainability for Colgate-Palmolive, has also been selected to serve as AMERIPEN president. Presenting at the opening session of the recently concluded Plastics Recycling Conference in New Orleans, Pierce provided new information on the role of packaging producers and brand owners in plastics recycling and sustainability. She also outlined efforts to revise ISO standards for recycled and degradable packaging, possibly hinting at some first orders of business for AMERIPEN. See the full article.
