The recent approval of the federal government’s 459-page budget included a $1.6 billion cut in spending by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This represents a 16 percent reduction, and returns the EPA to budget levels of about five years ago.
The 2011 EPA budget of $8.7 billion indicates that most of the cuts – three quarters or $1.19 billion – will be from regional, state and local programs. For instance, State and Tribal Assistance Grants, which fund drinking water infrastructure efforts, took a heavy hit, as did a program to purchase of lands for environmental improvement. Federal agencies have 30 days in which to fully detail their budgets.A Article courtesy of Resource Recycling.
