NAID expands secure destruction standard

By Henry Leineweber, Resource Recycling

The National Association for Information Destruction has launched a new certification aimed a solid state drives and flash memory.

The NAID AAA Certification Program for Sanitization Operation applies to solid state hard drives (SSDs), which are growing in popularity, as well as mobile phones and internet devices, memory cards and other flash memory units. Before the development of the new standard, conventional wisdom was that the only way to securely destroy data on SSD devices was physical destruction.

"That was our misconception too when we starting researching it about eight months ago," says NAID CEO Bob Johnson. "As research out of UCSD magnetic resonance lab suggests, partially removing the data from SSDs is an issue, since it can literally move inside the device. But that same research shows that when all the data is sanitized, it is effective."

Under the new standard, sanitized drives are inspected by NAID auditors using various forensic techniques for verified data destruction.

Companies that had been previously certified to NAID AAA can now add a Solid State Memory Endorsement to their current certification. More information is available at NAID's site.
