**Recover the Value Your SAP RISE Migration Leaves Behind**

*How to turn the 2027 SAP ECC deadline into an enterprise asset-recovery opportunity instead of a write-off.*

Over the next twenty-four months, thousands of organizations will complete SAP decommissioning projects as they move to SAP S/4HANA or RISE with SAP.

A firm support deadline, not a routine technology refresh, is driving this change. When you shut down your SAP environment, you leave behind servers, storage, and network equipment that still have market value.

Your migration plan may not include that value. With early planning, you can recover data center hardware costs instead of treating every retired asset as a disposal expense.

This article explains the migration wave and the equipment your data center may leave behind. It also shows how to estimate SAP hardware asset recovery value in today’s market.

You’ll learn what your equipment is truly worth in today’s market, how conventional accounting treatment can leave significant value on the table, and why the difference between a strategic ITAD program and a routine disposition effort is substantial enough to impact board-level results.

## The deadline is real, and your window is narrowing

SAP has confirmed that mainstream maintenance for SAP ECC enhancement packages 6 through 8 ends on December 31, 2027. Extended maintenance is available through December 31, 2030 for an added fee.

Beginning in January 2031, SAP plans to offer only customer-specific maintenance. That option does not include legal changes, support packages, or new database and operating system versions.

If you run enhancement package 5 or below, mainstream maintenance ended at the close of 2025.

A large share of the market still needs to migrate. The [Precisely and ASUG 2026 Trends and Challenges Report](https://www.precisely.com/resource-center/analystreports/transforming-sap-processes-through-automation-2026-trends-challenges/) found that 59% of organizations are fully or partly live on S/4HANA.

That leaves about 41% with work still ahead. Other industry estimates place the remaining group even higher.

The [DSAG Investment Report 2026](https://impulsant.dsag.de/formate/pressemeldung/dsag-investment-report-2026-companies-are-investing-more-selectively-ai-is-becoming-established-cloud-computing-is-being-put-to-the-test/) found that only 37% of companies still on ECC expect to reach S/4HANA by the end of 2027. About half plan to finish by 2030 and pay for extended support in the meantime.

Your migration will require time and capital. A typical enterprise conversion can take 18 to 36 months and may cost $5 million to $50 million or more after consulting, licensing, and change management.

The direction is clear, but timing still matters. For much of the remaining ECC installed base, the key planning window falls within the next 36 months.

## If you operate a large estate, more value may be waiting

One detail matters more than the headline adoption rate: where the recoverable hardware sits. The [SAPinsider RISE with SAP 2025 benchmark](https://sapinsider.org/research-reports/sapinsider-benchmark-research-rise-with-sap-2025/) found that smaller organizations are about twice as likely to be fully live as larger enterprises.

Among larger enterprises, 35% remain in planning or exploration. Longer decision cycles and more complex SAP landscapes can slow the move.

If your organization has a large on-premises footprint, your SAP decommissioning event may still be ahead. Legacy ECC and Business Suite use fell below half of respondents for the first time in 2025.

The same benchmark found that 73% of organizations are somewhere in the transition. Many of the largest owned hardware estates have not yet completed the move.

This creates a focused SAP hardware asset recovery opportunity for mid-size and large enterprises through 2028.

What SAP decommissioning may retire

Your SAP landscape includes far more than one server. Each production system may include development, quality assurance, sandbox, and production environments.

High-availability pairs, a disaster recovery site, and a backup tier add more equipment. When you move to RISE, you may retire the full landscape within weeks of cutover.

Start with your HANA database servers. HANA runs in memory, so each node may hold one to four terabytes of registered memory, compared with 256 gigabytes in a general-purpose application server.

Many organizations refreshed these estates between 2018 and 2021. That can place the equipment in a generation that buyers still want.

A single cutover often creates a large, consistent, and well-documented lot. Those traits can support stronger remarketing results.

What your hardware may be worth in 2026

## The memory market has moved in your favor

If you valued your retired server hardware two years ago, review the estimate again. Demand from artificial intelligence infrastructure has tightened the memory market.

[TrendForce memory pricing research](https://www.trendforce.com/presscenter/news/20260331-12995.html) projected conventional DRAM contract prices to rise 58% to 63% quarter over quarter in the second quarter of 2026. This market shift can also affect used and refurbished equipment.

The server memory secondary market value in your business case may now be out of date.

Memory supply remains tight, and demand for server products continues to grow. Use current [TrendForce DRAM price trends](https://www.trendforce.com/price/dram/dram_spot) and live market quotes when you value an estate.

The table below summarizes the assumptions used in this article as of September 2026.

| **Asset** | **Pricing** | **Source** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| DDR4 ECC server memory, median in-stock price | $9.17 per GB | DatacenterDisk Server RAM Price Index, Sept 2026 |
| DDR5 ECC server memory, median in-stock price | $38.48 per GB, about 4.2 times DDR4 | DatacenterDisk Server RAM Price Index, Sept 2026 |
| Conventional DRAM contract prices, Q1 2026 | Up 90 to 95 per cent quarter over quarter | TrendForce |
| Conventional DRAM contract prices, Q2 2026 | Up 58 to 63 per cent quarter over quarter | TrendForce |
| Used and refurbished DDR4 ECC RDIMM against early 2025 | Up 60 to 80 per cent | 2026 secondary-market indices |
| Server RDIMM bit supply growth, 2027 | 15 to 20 per cent, shortage persists | TrendForce forecast |

Estimate your SAP hardware asset recovery opportunity

The model below values only the installed memory in a retiring SAP landscape. It does not include chassis, processors, storage, network equipment, racks, or power equipment.

The model applies the listed DDR4 ECC price to installed capacity. It then shows a 30% to 50% recovery range after grading, data sanitization, and remarketing margin.

The results are examples, not quotes. Your actual recovery starts with a serialized inventory and a current market review.

| **Estate profile** | **Installed memory** | **Gross in-stock value** | **Recovery at      30-50%** |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Mid-size: 8 HANA nodes at 1.5 TB plus 24 application servers at 256 GB | 18 TB (18,432 GB) | $169,021 | $50,706 to $84,511 |
| Large: 20 HANA nodes at 2 TB plus 80 application servers at 256 GB | 60 TB (61,440 GB) | $563,405 | $169,021 to $281,702 |

Across the market, memory alone may represent a meaningful recovery pool. The model shows how estate size and server memory secondary market value can change the result.

These figures are examples based on the stated pricing and estate assumptions. To estimate your own SAP hardware asset recovery, start with a serialized inventory of the actual equipment.

## Do not let “fully depreciated” become “worthless”

Your organization may give away value if it treats fully depreciated hardware as a disposal cost. A zero book value is an accounting result, not a market value.

The equipment may be five to seven years old and still have buyers. Your carrying amount and market price are different numbers.

A zero carrying amount can work in your favor. Under standard fixed-asset disposal treatment, your organization generally records the difference between sale price and book value as a gain.

The example in this article shows a possible recovery of $50,000 to $280,000 against an $8 million migration. That equals about 1% to 3% of the program cost in the model.

Ask your finance team to confirm the accounting treatment for your organization.

Act early to protect value. Secondary-market prices often fall as hardware moves one or two generations behind.

Equipment that sits unused for a year may move into a lower value band or sell only for parts. Delays can also make it harder to recover data center hardware costs.

Before you scrap an estate, check whether other workloads can use the memory or whether a buyer values the components.

ITAD strategies for enterprise SAP landscapes

The right IT asset disposition partner can make a major difference in SAP hardware asset recovery. Speed alone does not create that value.

Your partner should price components, reach strong market channels, and provide clear settlement reports that finance can verify.

Well-planned ITAD strategies for enterprise SAP landscapes can determine whether the remaining value returns to your business.

## Compare your disposition options

SAP decommissioning can produce very different financial results. Your contract structure affects how much value you keep.

Compare the recovery model as carefully as you compare the provider.

| **Disposition route** | **Recent generation  gear** | **Older equipment** | **Trade-off** |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Traditional ITAD on a flat fee | 5 to 15 per cent of original purchase price | 0 to 5 per cent | Simple, but typically delivers the lowest return and least transparency; the provider may bundle valuable gear with scrap. |
| Direct sale to brokers or refurbishers | 15 to 35 per cent | 5 to 15 per cent | Can deliver the highest return, but your team manages logistics, data-destruction assurance, and multiple counterparties. |
| Manufacturer trade-in credit | 10 to 25 per cent as credit | Not applicable | Simple, but you can use the credit only with one vendor and must align it with a new purchase. |
| Modern ITAD, component-level with revenue share | Approaches direct-sale economics | Not applicable | Can approach direct-sale economics when your partner prices components individually and provides transparent reporting. |

Recent-generation enterprise equipment can retain value when organizations time and manage disposition well. Most SAP estates are older, so actual results will vary.

The core lesson is simple: value falls over time, and your disposition strategy helps shape the outcome.

## What to require from your ITAD partner

Method and contract terms can separate a weak recovery from a strong one. Ask the six questions below before you choose a partner.

Clear answers will help you judge whether the provider will protect your value or only remove the equipment.

1\. Do you value components individually?

A HANA node may be worth more when the partner identifies and markets its memory modules instead of selling the full unit as an older chassis.

2\. Will you provide serialized settlement reports?

Your report should show what sold and for how much at the asset level. Avoid a lump-sum offer that hides the resale details.

3\. How will you protect our data and preserve resale value?

Ask for sanitization methods that align with [NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2](https://csrc.nist.gov/pubs/sp/800/88/r2/final). Use physical destruction when media has failed or when your security policy requires it.

4\. Which certifications and downstream controls do you maintain?

Verify the [R2v3 standard](https://sustainableelectronics.org/welcome-to-r2v3/) and [NAID AAA Certification](https://isigmaonline.org/certifications/naid-aaa-certification/) scope that applies to your project. Also require complete chain-of-custody records.

5\. Will your environmental reporting stand up to review?

Ask for records that support [GRI 306: Waste 2020](https://www.globalreporting.org/standards/standards-development/topic-standard-for-waste-gri-306/) and [Scope 3 Category 5 guidance](https://ghgprotocol.org/scope-3-calculation-guidance-2) when those frameworks apply to your reporting program.

6\. When should planning begin?

Build disposition into the migration plan before removal. Early planning gives your team more time to inventory assets, confirm data requirements, and test the market.

## Start protecting your recovery now

If your roadmap includes a RISE or S/4HANA cutover through 2028, your choices now will shape the recovery. Start with three steps.

First, inventory the estate before cutover. Capture serial numbers, configurations, and installed memory in each node.

Second, obtain a current market valuation. Old assumptions may not reflect today’s server memory secondary market value.

Third, place the expected recovery in the program budget as income. Assign an owner, set a target, and show finance where the proceeds may offset migration costs.

When you forecast the recovery, your team is more likely to protect it when the cutover schedule tightens.

## The bottom line for your business

The 2027 deadline will move a large amount of enterprise hardware into retirement within a short period. Many of the largest SAP footprints still have a migration ahead.

If you treat the hardware only as a disposal problem, you may leave real value behind. Current memory demand may support recovery that older business cases did not expect.

You have already paid for the equipment. Plan now so its remaining value returns to your business.

Frequently asked questions
